Sails

Tell Zora which sails are up and how far each one is reefed. Zora then knows the boat is sailing, shows the sail area you carry, and tells you when the wind calls for a reef or lets you shake one out.

Your sails and their reefs are set up once, with the wind limit and the area of each reef. See Sail in the Setup guide.

Open the Sails sheet

Tap the tools button in the app bar, titled with the vessel state. Sails is on the tools tab, after Engines. It stays there while you moor or dock, and at anchor once the anchor holds.

The sheet only shows once the boat has sails. With more than one sail, the title shows how many, and tapping it folds the sheet away. The display remembers whether you left it open.

Read the sheet

active sail area is the total area of the sails you have up, at their reef. With every sail down it reads no sails set.

Each sail has a card:

• the sail's name, and 100% or Reef 1, Reef 2 and so on, with the sail's area at that reef.
• load: the wind range this reef is made for, from the limit of the reef before it up to the limit of this one.
• AWS and TWS: where the apparent and the true wind sit in that range. A marker at the left end means the wind is below the range; at the right end, above it.

A sail that is down reads down and is greyed. When Zora has a reef notification for a sail, its card takes the notification's colour.

Set or reef a sail

1. Tap the sail. Its reef menu opens, with the sail's name in the middle.
2. Tap the setting you want. The buttons go from the largest sail to the smallest: 100%, then Reef 1, Reef 2 and so on, each with max and the highest wind for it. down takes the sail down.

The setting you have now is greyed out. The reef that suits the present wind is marked suggested, for example suggested Reef 1. To close the menu without a change, tap the middle.

With a sail up, the vessel state becomes sailing, or motor-sailing while an engine runs. See How the state changes. Zora keeps your setting across a restart, and writes each change in the logbook.

Take every sail down

While a sail is up, down shows at the right of the Sails title. Tap it, then tap All Sails Down. Tap Cancel in the middle to keep them up. The logbook records all sails down.

Once you have stopped, at anchor, on a mooring or at the dock, down blinks as a reminder that a sail is still set.

Reef notifications

While a sail is up, Zora compares the wind with the limits of the reef you carry, using the apparent wind averaged over the last while:

• above the limit of this reef: Genoa high wind, Suggest: Reef the Genoa.
• reefed, and below the limit of the reef before: Genoa low wind, Suggest: unreef the Genoa.
• back inside the range: Genoa OK, which clears itself after a few seconds.

At full sail Zora only tells you when to reef. A sail that is down has no notifications.

Tap the notification to open that sail's reef menu, and pick the reef.

Night sailing

A sail can be set to be reefed or taken down at night, in its settings; see Night sailing. From the start of sunset, Zora then warns while that sail is carried further than you asked: Genoa at night, with Suggest: take a reef in the Genoa or Suggest: take down the Genoa. Tap it to open the reef menu. The warning clears once you reef or take the sail down, and at sunrise.

Set how quickly Zora suggests a reef

reef notification under active sail area sets how much Zora averages the wind before it compares it with your reef limits. Tap it and choose very fast, fast, normal, slow or very slow.

• very fast reacts to a gust soon after it arrives.
• very slow waits until the wind has stayed up for a while.

The same averaged wind decides which reef the reef menu marks suggested. Zora uses normal until you choose. The setting is for the whole boat, and Zora keeps it across a restart.
