NoForeignLand
NoForeignLand is a cruising community website. Zora records the boat's track and uploads it to your boat on noforeignland.com, so the track there stays up to date without anyone touching it.
You do this in the Zora Setup app. See Open the Setup app.
Before you start
You need the boat's Boat API Key from NoForeignLand. Log in at noforeignland.com, go to Account > Settings > Boat tracking, and copy the key. The website opens outside Zora and needs internet.
Set it up
- On the Setup app's home screen, tap Add-ons & Third-Party, then the Third-Party Integrations tab, then NoForeignLand.
- Paste the key into Boat API Key.
- Under Data Source, pick the position source to track. The list shows the sources sending the boat's position right now. Only positions from this source are recorded.
- Choose whether to Send While Underway; see below.
- Switch on Enabled. It stays greyed out until both the key and the data source are filled in.
- Tap Save. NoForeignLand settings saved confirms it.
The change takes effect straight away; Zora does not restart. The card on the add-ons page now reads enabled.
To pause tracking, switch Enabled off and tap Save. Your settings are kept.
Send While Underway
- Off: Zora keeps the track while you sail and uploads the leg once the boat has stopped.
- On: Zora uploads while you are sailing too.
What Zora records
Zora records a position at most once a minute, and only when the boat has moved at least 50 m and is making at least 1.5 kn. A boat swinging at anchor stays out of the track. If there has been no speed reading for five minutes, positions are recorded without the speed check.
A position at 0,0, or one that would mean the boat jumped at over 100 kn, is dropped.
Zora uploads about once an hour, each time with a delay of up to 12 minutes so that boats do not all call NoForeignLand at once. Nothing goes up until the boat has moved 100 m from the last upload.
With no internet, the track waits on the Zora server, and a restart does not lose it. It holds up to 20,000 positions, about two weeks of passage at one a minute. Beyond that, the oldest positions are dropped.
Check it is working
With Enabled on, a line under the settings says how many positions are waiting and when the last upload went: No track waiting to upload, or the number of positions waiting, then last sent and how long ago. Until the first upload since Zora last started, it ends with nothing sent yet.
If the last upload failed, Last attempt failed: follows with the reason. The track is kept and Zora tries again at the next upload.
