Start Timer ​

The Start Timer counts down to the start gun of a race, then shows how long you have been racing since the gun. Its companion, the Start Line widget, tells you whether you will reach the line early or late. Both are in the regatta group of widgets.

Before you start ​

The timer works while a race is open. You open one from the route you want to race: in the route's details, set the toggle to regatta and tap start. A route with no start and finish line shows set lines instead. See Routes.

With no race open the widget reads no race and its buttons are greyed out.

Add it to a screen ​

In Edit Mode, open the regatta group and tap Start Timer. It arrives 6 columns wide and 11 rows high, and can be made as small as 6 by 4.

The timer has nothing to set up. Its settings do not change what it shows.

Set the start ​

With a race open and no gun set, the header reads set the start.

  • Set opens the start presets: 1 min, 3 min, 5 min and 10 min. Tap one to set the gun that many minutes from now. The cross closes the presets.
  • Start now starts the race on the spot, for a practice start or a gun you missed.

The gun time belongs to the boat, so every display shows the same countdown. A display that restarts during the sequence picks it up where it is.

Reading the widget ​

Before the gun the header reads start in, and the countdown shows minutes and seconds. In the last minute it shows the seconds alone.

  • The figure is blue while more than a minute remains, amber in the last minute and red in the last five seconds.
  • A short beep sounds at each whole minute and at each of the last five seconds, and a long one at the gun. The beeps play on the display where you tapped Set or Start now, while the timer is on screen.

After the start the header reads REGATTA TIME and the figure counts the time since the gun.

End the race ​

  • Before the gun, Abort asks Abort the regatta?. Confirming clears the timer and hides the start and finish lines.
  • After the start, Finish asks Finish the race?. Confirming ends the race.

Either one ends the race on every display on the boat. The course stays drawn on the chart after a finish. Rounding the last mark does not end the race; tap Finish when you cross the line.

The same exit is on the chart's regatta bar and in the route's details.

Start Line ​

Start Line, also in the regatta group, arrives 4 columns wide and 8 rows high. It compares the time you need to reach the start line at your present speed with the time left to the gun. It measures the distance square to the line.

  • Before the gun is set, the header reads TO LINE and the figure is the time to the line. The line below reads set the start timer.
  • While the countdown runs, the header reads EARLY in amber when you would reach the line more than 3 seconds before the gun, LATE in red when more than 3 seconds after, and ON TIME in green in between. The figure is the seconds early (+) or late (−). The line below gives the distance to the line and the seconds to reach it.
  • set the start line means the race has no start line to measure against.
  • Below about 0.1 knot there is no time to the line, and the figure is a dash.

Start Line counts down to the same gun as the Start Timer, so it works on a screen of its own.
